Lunch in Hamburg

The cycle path to the station in Flensburg isn't the best. You have to cross fairly busy roads a couple of times, and you're nearly out of the city before you can see it.

It's a nice brick building slightly reminiscent of Amsterdam Central Station. But it's being renovated, of course.

We're amongst the first to get on the train, which is good because the bike car is quickly full.

We arrive in Hamburg Altona only slightly late, where Kerstin's son, is waiting to collect her saddle bags, and then we're off to the harbour to find some lunch.

Then it's off to the old tunnel under the Elbe. This is now officially part of the cycleway in Hamburg and is completely free. You ride into a lift, if takes you down and you can then ride through beautifully tiled tunnels under the river. On the other side, you can carry on your journey, enjoy the view or just go back.

Then we're off to Elphi - Hamburg's (in)famous concert hall. It was so massively late and over budget, as these projects so often are, that the city council made it free to visit to appease a suitably outraged population. It is a stunning building, with a great view and well worth visiting. Though it's unlikely to remain free to visit…

Because we've still got our luggage, I'm waiting with the bikes while Kerstin shows Astrid round.
