Just a slight walk down the hill from our flat are the grounds of the castle. A baroque garden complete with a series of terraces is a reminder of how important the city once was, though it fell into disrepair as the once proud Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein became part of Prussia.

It has since been restored, but the gardens are not really maintained, beyond the hedges. The castle is truly enormous but is currently being restored. In the Nydam Hall, there is the oldest known (300 AD) viking-style long boat that has been expertly restored.
