Neustadt in Holstein - Or, Avoiding the scenic route

Today we decided to go the seaside again. The route looked pretty straightforward and flattish. It started off pretty well and after a couple of Ks next to the main road we were on a nice quiet country road and everything seemed to be going well.

We got onto a new, dedicated cycle path next to the road and then I got the instruction to turn right and leave the road. Okay, I thought, presumably the road goes east rather than south.

I think the idea was to take us on an old rail track. But instead we found ourselves on another farm track. And I must have missed a turning because we ended up coming out on the main road where the green flag is. Astrid was, of course, not amused! In addition to the poor road surface, we ended up taking a detour of about three kilometres!🙈Not least because I told it to avoid all unpaved roads. Or else! 🤬

I can normally rely on my SatNav to choose good, quiet roads, and I also generally notice quickly, when I've made a wrong turn. It happens easier than you think.

The rest of the ride to Neustadt was pretty straightforward, particularly once we rejoined the road! But on the main road into Neustadt it was clear how much traffic there was.

We went stopped in the harbour for a walk and something to eat and then decided to cycle on to the beach. But didn't want to post €3 just dip our toes into the sea. I suspect on quieter days, and when you haven't taken unnecessary detours, it's quite a nice place to visit. Maybe next time.

So it was time to head back, knowing that we'd have to climb a bit from the bay up the valley. I think Astrid hit the lactic acid wall fairly quickly but once we were out of the valley, and on the right road, it was fairly (not entirely) plain sailing back to Eutin.
